Juneteenth — short for “June Nineteenth” — is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. While the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863, it wasn’t until June 19, 1865 that Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and announced the end of the Civil War — bringing with them the long-overdue news that enslaved people were now free. This moment marked the liberation of the last remaining enslaved African Americans in the Confederacy. Juneteenth has since become a powerful symbol of Black freedom, resilience and the continued fight for equality in America.

In 2021, Juneteenth was officially designated a federal holiday, reaffirming its importance to our national history and future. Juneteenth is more than a history lesson — it is a day to celebrate Black culture, reflect on progress and commit to justice, equity and inclusion.
