4 Tips for a Smooth Road Trip

In the summertime, you typically see an increase in traffic on the road. If you are among those still planning to take a road trip this season for pleasure or work, it’s important to make sure you and your vehicle are prepared before leaving the driveway.

To help prepare, here are a few simple tips to keep in mind.

1. Inspect your ride

Have a mechanic give your vehicle a full inspection before you hit the road. Be sure to check coolant and oil levels to help protect your engine. Also, check tire pressure and ensure that all carriers and trailers are properly attached and secure before taking off.

2. Pack your supplies

When loading your vehicle, make sure you leave space for your roadside emergency kit. Pack all necessities including water, food, first aid supplies, a tire kit and jumper cables. Also, if you are traveling with children, bring plenty of games, snacks and activities to entertain and keep them from distracting you.

3. Plan your route

Review your route before leaving the driveway. Have a general idea of your travel time along with how often and where you’ll stop between destinations. Minimize those unexpected delays by checking the route for detours, construction or traffic jams.

4. Check your insurance coverage

Review your auto insurance to ensure you have the coverage you need for your road trip. Ask your insurance agent about roadside assistance and coverage options for unexpected scenarios such as accidents, passenger injuries or weather damage.
