RBFCU’s Sonya McDonald Receives Recognition for Leadership

The San Antonio Business Journal names RBFCU Executive Vice President-Chief Operating Officer Sonya McDonald as a trailblazer in Women’s Leadership

LIVE OAK, Texas (Aug. 16, 2024) — Sonya McDonald’s two decades of outstanding service to Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union was recognized by the San Antonio Business Journal’s Women’s Leadership Awards.

Sonya McDonaldMcDonald was one of 25 women honored in the Business Journal’s annual ceremony that celebrates women leaders from the San Antonio area. The honorees were featured through video submissions where McDonald spoke on her journey to leadership in the financial world and how she works to guide and inspire the next generation of female leaders inside and outside of RBFCU.

As a military spouse and mentor, Sonya exemplifies leadership in every aspect of her life. Her belief in the credit union advantage and her dedication to RBFCU and the broader community make this recognition well deserved.”

McDonald is the Executive Vice President-Chief Operating Officer at RBFCU, a position she has held for nearly five years. She began her career at RBFCU in 2003 as the Vice President of Sales Operations. She was then promoted to Senior Vice President of Planning and Marketing. She was named RBFCU’s Executive Vice President-Chief of Staff in April 2014 and responsible for Audit and Human Resources, then served as EVP-Chief Lending Officer from September 2015 until she became EVP-COO in January 2019. She is the first female and Hispanic EVP at RBFCU.

Her career in credit unions started in the early 1990s in Omaha, Nebraska and Dayton, Ohio. She is a champion of the credit union industry and has spoken on behalf of credit unions in front of congressional committees at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. President George W. Bush personally honored McDonald for her volunteer work on behalf of wounded war veterans. She has been involved in Returning Heroes Home, the USO, Operation Home Front and served as a deacon at her church.

Currently, McDonald is on the advisory council for Haven for Hope and serves as the treasurer of KLRN. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, and she and her husband have a son and a daughter.
