5 Tips to Secure Your Home

Your home is one of your most valuable possessions, along with everything inside. It's a place you want to feel safe and secure from the potential dangers of the outside world. Employing some basic best practices around home security is the first step to creating a secure environment. Consider these tips to help keep you and your possessions protected.

  1. Set a safety routine. Establish a routine where you regularly lock all doors, shut windows and turn on your alarm system every time you leave or enter your home.
  2. Get to know your neighbors. Meet and engage with your neighbors and encourage them to watch out for any suspicious activity.
  3. Turn on your lights. Lighting throughout the house can be a deciding factor on whether or not thieves target your house. Install motion sensors, automatic timers or smart lightbulbs to create the illusion that you are home.
  4. Avoid leaving delivery boxes in plain sight. Consider requiring a signature for deliveries to avoid someone stealing them off your porch. Also, be mindful of discarded packaging in your trash or recycling bin (i.e., flat-screen TV box, computer box).
  5. Create a plan for when you are away. Hold your mail, stop your papers and ask a friend or neighbor to remove flyers from your property to avoid appearing away from home.

While you’re thinking about home security, why not take the opportunity to review your homeowners insurance to make sure your valuables are covered?
