Summertime Auto Care Tips

It's hot outside!

You may think the only summertime driving difference is the fact that the seats sear your skin and the air needs to be on full-blast at all times. However, the steamy summer weather can affect your vehicle and your driving habits in many ways.

We've put together a simple checklist that may help you maximize your car's summertime effectiveness.

Check fluids. Just like you need to stay hydrated in hot weather, make sure you're vehicle's not thirsty, either! Take a peek under the hood to check your coolant levels. If your car runs too low on coolant, you run the risk of overheating. You'll also want to take a look at your oil levels and make sure you're completing oil changes in a timely manner (typically recommended once every 3,000 miles, but check your car's specific guidelines).

Check tires. Big temperature swings -- such as from the extreme daytime heat to the relative cool overnight -- can cause your tires to lose pressure more quickly than usual. And, when your tires aren't properly inflated, they can affect your vehicle's miles-per-gallon and overall performance. Rotate your tires – and check their air pressure frequently – to ensure they're withstanding the summer heat.

Replace windshield wipers. Although the concept of a rainstorm may seem foreign during the usual scorching summer weather, maintaining your windshield wipers may help keep you safe. To prepare for unexpected storms, you'll want to make sure your wipers are in good condition. Having adequate windshield wiper fluid also can keep your windshield clear from the summer's inevitable spattering of dust, pollen and bugs.

Maintain air conditioning. Are you getting the relief you expect from your cooling system on the hottest days? If not, you may want to assess your system, or have it inspected for leaks and clogs. Not only will you be able to chill out a little more in your car, but you'll also make your vehicle a little more efficient.

Make sure your financing is in order. Auto financing is an evergreen issue, and any season can be ideal for making sure you're getting the best deal on your loan rate. Is your auto loan with RBFCU? If not, consider refinancing your vehicle over to us. You just might end up saving money on your monthly payments, which will make your summer cooler AND sweeter.

Where ever you're driving this summer – whether it's to the neighborhood pool or on a cross-country trip – make sure you're keeping your car in tip-top summer shape. After all, it's keeping you on the road to adventure and fun!
