Credit Union News

LIVE OAK, Texas – Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union and United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County are hosting a social media experiment at local credit union branches. The question: will people use social media to benefit others?

Local residents who visit selected RBFCU branches will earn money for United Way simply by promoting their branch visit through Foursquare, Facebook or Twitter. The program, Check in for Charity, was developed based on the popularity of Foursquare check ins to local RBFCU branches. However, because Foursquare usage is still growing in San Antonio, the Check in for Charity program will be extended to users of other social media services as well.

"The Foursquare check ins we tracked at certain branches showed us members were proud to announce their affiliation with RBFCU," said Sonya McDonald, vice president of sales and marketing. "Based on the tumultuous economy of the past couple of years, people may not be able to give charitably at the same levels as in the past, but they can feel good that a simple stop at their local RBFCU branch makes a difference for their community."

The credit union's promotion will run from Nov. 15, 2010, through Jan. 15, 2011 and will include four local branches: Brooks, Marshall Road, IH10@UTSA and Northcliffe. Each visit to these branches will earn $5 for United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County – with up to $1,000 total being generated by the promotion.

"United Way of San Antonio and Bexar County is pleased to participate with Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union in the Check in for Charity social media program," said Doug Yeiser, United Way vice president of strategic markets. "We're thrilled to partner with RBFCU on this innovative approach to caring, on top of the support from their employee campaign. Foursquare, Twitter, and Facebook are important tools in raising awareness and assisting others in our community," Yeiser added.

Please review the Check In for Charity rules for full details on the promotion.
