Bowl-A-Thon raises $34,000 to help the children of South Texas

(Live Oak, Texas) – Randolph-Brooks Federal Credit Union (RBFCU) just completed its 13th Annual Credit Unions for Kids Bowl-A-Thon on March 15, 2009, raising more than $34,000 to benefit the children of South Central Texas who use the Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital in San Antonio and Dell Children's Medical Center in Austin.

"The camaraderie this event encourages is just one of the many benefits it offers – the most important being that we raise money for children who need help," said Tracy Johnson, Randolph-Brooks Vice President of Finance and Bowl-A-Thon Chairperson. "I have been involved with the event since its inception and began chairing the Bowl-A-Thon in 2005. Since then, I'm happy to say Randolph-Brooks has raised more than $120,000 from employees, retirees, volunteers, vendors, family members, and friends who participate in this special event."

The Randolph-Brooks Bowl-A-Thon is huge and grows bigger each year. It requires a bowling center to host the event for an entire day. This year, Fiesta Lanes in New Braunfels, Texas hosted 69 teams of five to bowl in two shifts – morning and afternoon.

A dedicated group of 14 committee members worked six months to coordinate the event including teaming up with a long list of companies willing to offer money or in kind goods to make the event successful and ultimately benefit the children. Companies who have consistently helped support the Bowl-A-Thon over the years include Diebold, Loomis, Harland, and Pulse, among many others.

"Everyone enjoyed being together bowling and having a chance to win nice prizes," Johnson added. "We have an adult and child raffle, a silent auction, and door prizes all donated by sponsors, local businesses and our own employees. And since most of our participants are amateur bowlers, when Nik Alonzo bowled a perfect 300 game – we all broke out in applause. The Bowl-A-Thon is a fun way to raise money for a good cause that many of us are very passionate about!"

First originating in 1985 in San Antonio, Credit Unions for Kids is a partner with the Children's Miracle Network which provides significant donations to both Christus Santa Rosa Children's Hospital and Dell Children's Medical Center.

Credit Unions for Kids is a true testament to the credit union spirit of "People Helping People." It is the coming together of many individuals who share the same concern – to help children and their families in perhaps their greatest time of need. Randolph-Brooks began participating with Credit Unions for Kids in 1987.
